The Upper Mustang Trek takes you into one of Nepal’s most remote and mysterious regions. Often called the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” Upper Mustang has preserved its traditional Tibetan culture and unique desert-like landscapes. The trek offers a mix of rugged mountains, high desert valleys, ancient monasteries, and walled villages, making it a journey that feels both adventurous and culturally enriching.
The trail usually begins from Jomsom or Pokhara and gradually climbs into the arid landscapes of Upper Mustang. Along the route, trekkers pass through small villages where life remains largely unchanged for centuries. Lo Manthang, the former capital, is the cultural heart of Upper Mustang, with ancient walls, monasteries, and traditional houses that reflect the region’s Tibetan heritage.
As you progress along the trail, you’ll encounter dramatic cliffs, deep valleys, and ancient caves carved into rock, once used by monks and locals for meditation or storage. Colorful prayer flags and chortens (Buddhist monuments) are scattered along the paths, providing insight into the spiritual life of the region.
Accommodation along the trek consists of basic tea houses and lodges, where rooms are simple but clean. Meals usually include local dishes such as noodles, potatoes, and Tibetan bread. In remote areas, facilities are limited, but the warmth and hospitality of local families make the experience memorable.
To enter Upper Mustang, trekkers need a special Restricted Area Permit, and trekking with a licensed guide is mandatory. The trek is best undertaken in spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is stable and the skies are clear.
The Upper Mustang Trek is ideal for travelers looking for a quiet, remote adventure combined with rich cultural experiences. With its dramatic landscapes, ancient villages, and Tibetan-influenced traditions, it offers a unique Himalayan journey that leaves a lasting impression.
